ABOUT THE BOOK                        
 Araminta Jewell is a beauty; a dazzling young
lady who manages to resist all the blandishments that come her way. But even her marriage to Sir Martin Culthorpe has
not discouraged the rakes of London and she is still pursued with unflagging zeal. It is during her first sitting for a
portrait that Christopher Redmayne meets the lovely Lady Culthorpe, although he has heard much about her. Before the
portrait can be finished, however, Sir Martin is murdered.
Christopher embarks on a quest to discover the killer's
identity, but with each new day bringing a fresh batch of suspects, and the matter of whether Sir Martin was killed
because of his shady business dealings or for the exquisite prize of his wife still unclear, Christopher knows this will
be far from an easy case to crack...

 
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Edward
Marston was born and brought up in Wales. He read Modern History at Oxford then lectured in the subject for three years
before becoming a full-time freelance writer.
His first historical mystery, The Queen's Head, was published in
1988, launching the Nicholas Bracewell series.
Marston has worked as an actor and director, and once ran his own
professional fringe theatre company. He has also taught drama in a prison and worked as a story editor for a film
company at Pinewood.
He has written over forty original plays for radio, television and the theatre, and hundreds
of episodes of drama series. But he now concentrates on developing the various series of crime novels that have come
from his pen. Under the pseudonym of Conrad Allen, he has written eight nautical mysteries, set during the Edwardian
era. The first, Murder on the Lusitania, came out in 1999.

McCready trained at The Webber Douglas Academy. Stage credits include: Oberon in A Midsummer Night?s Dream, Son in A
Voyage Round My Father and Walter Langer in Five Finger Exercise. Television appearances include Arthur Symons in
